The Speaker who was addressing a delegation from Radio Nigeria Atlantic FM Uyo on a courtesy call on him said, people should endeavour to familiarize themselves with laws passed by the House in order to be equipped in their criticism of the legislators.

The Speaker specifically mentioned the widowhood law passed by the House which allows for fairness and justice in dealing with widow. He also encouraged the people to seek for copies of the laws which are available in assembly anytime for members of the public. Hon Ikon said, the 5th Assembly remains the People’s Assembly because the people collectively voted and gave them the mandate to represent their interest in the Assembly saying that explains why each law made by the House is subjected to public hearing. He said the lawmakers have strived to justify the mandate by pursuing programmes that are people oriented.

Speaking further, the speaker referred his guests to the timely intervention of the House at a time the security of life and property was greatly challenged by criminals. He commended Radio Nigeria Atlantic FM Uyo for the quality of their programmes for its audience. Earlier the General Manager of Radio Nigeria Atlantic FM Uyo Mr. Barikuno Aduo had informed the Speaker that his station will soon commence a new programme tagged “Assembly Watch” which according to him is aimed at taking the Assembly to the grassroots and also allowing the people to know more about the Assembly in a bit to improve on the coverage of Assembly activities by the station.

He said that his station wants to be deeply involved in the reportage of the activities of the House other than relying on only press releases while reporting the House activities. The General Manager promised to be neutral and objective in carrying out the assignment. He added that by so doing the people which the lawmakers are representing will really feel the impact of their representation.
